THE ONE MAN SHOW....

Working in the  fashion industry has afforded me the opportunity to work with some of the  most beautiful people in the  world. People look at my images and think "wow, they look amazing." They do look amazing  but its a combination good lighting, composition, genetics, diet and exercise and a great team of stylist, hair and makeup professionals. Unfortunately most of the time i'm not equipped with a  team of stylist, makeup and  hair pros, so I have to compensate with the  art of retouching in photoshop.

Living in Memphis, I hardly ever had access to  high fashion hairstyling, makeup, and stylist with access to designer fashions. What I did was taught myself as much as possible and  make the  most of what i had available to me. I watched fashion programming on cable tv, studied artist who inspired me, and  read books.

When i first started  photography i was  a  sophomore in college and I was  using  a 35mm Pentax K1000. I used Kodak TMax100 and 400 film. I was shooting classmates and friends. At that time my professors  were  anti-digital and made it difficult for any student who used a digital camera. One of my professors  would  automatically drop your grade one letter if to used a digital camera. I didn't get into digital photography until years after college. Soon after i was introduced to photoshop and retouching. I taught myself by reading books.

these were the 2 books I turned to for anything I wanted to know about using photoshop

I viewed retouching like  and secondary art form and treated photoshop like a digital darkroom. Most of the ledgendary photographers, like my favorites Richard Avedon and Irving Penn, used contrast levels and dodging and burning methods when printing their images. I took those methods I studied in college and transfered them to the computer.

photograph by Richard Avedon
The areas which Avedon has circled required either different levels of contrast in the new print, or retouching by dodging and burning.

Makeup was not only a  way to "enhance" or "transform" a model's beauty but it also was a way to retouch them live. Retouching in photoshop became an alternative to having a makeup artist (since i don't have one) I leaned toward makeup art books to help me develop my own retouching technique. I read makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin's The Art of Makeup and  Sam Fine's Fine Beauty books.

When I was in high school I use to airbrush on jeans and  t-shirts  to make money on the side. I took that knowlege and  merged it with the  information in the makeup books  and  applied it to photoshop.

Aside from using photoshop for extreme high fashion makeup looks, I mainly use photoshop for basic, natural-looking clean-up. Most people look at my work and think it comes straight out of the camera looking that way. It took me a long time to master the "i woke up like this-look" with my retouching technique. One of the biggest compliments I've recived was from my fellow photographer Itaysha Jordan. She said the thing she like the most about my work was that the retouching made you believe that the models look like that.....It's refreshing to see a more natural looking style when everyone else is  following the  trend of making the models look fake and plastic.

Because my studio space is limited , I've had to rely on composition, lighting and editing skills to help with the illusion of large space.

I've watched tutorials about retouching hoping to learn ways to improve my techniques. I have  also watched other photographers retouch hoping to learn a few tricks to make my work better. Each time I apply new methods, I feel like its just making the process take longer. I already spend more time in front of photoshop editing  images  than I want to. My attention to details is time consuming, tedious, and  labor intensive. My style of retouching isn't a bunch of filters and quick actions.  I am a perfectionist and i work my ass off developing a retouching style that look consistently effortless..... and I'm still learning.

I dont think people take into consideration that I am a "one-man-show." I am the photographer, creative director, stylist, makeup, and hair person and retoucher all rolled up in one. Its difficult and time consuming. If i had a regular team on set, the time I spend retouching would be reduced by 75%. Some photographers send their work out to be retouched/ edited by professional retouchers. Retouching is a very expensive art form. Right now I can't afford to pay someone to do my retouching for me. I am not very trusting of  others and I am control freak. Its really difficult to give my work to someone else  and trust that they will maintain the  quality that is associated with my name. (My work load is currently forcing me to work on my trust issues and let others handle it).

MY LENS IS A REFLECTION OF WHO I AM.....

One Sunday afternoon, a model I was shooting arrived with a older white woman he introduced as his agent. I won't reveal the name of the agency , but it was an affiliate of the NTA Talent  umbrella. She didn't stay long, but she did stay long enough to get comfortable and shed some light on some things.

While she was at my place, I decided to give a fresh eye a sneak peek of the concept I was working on for my website I was building . I showed her two images that were going to flash back and forth on thte splash page introducing my website... one was of actor/model Donovan Christie Jr., who is a light-skinned Black/ Puerto Rican man, and the other was America's Next Top Model finalist Eugena Washington, who is a fairly dark-skinned Black American woman. The images where beautiful portraits of them holding a slip of paper in their mouth with my name on it.  I showed her the images and she offered her feedback. Any advice that was gonna be helpful toward making my website better I was more than willing to receive with open arms.

above: Eugena Washington
below: Donovan Christie Jr.

She told me the images where beautiful, but if I wanted my website to be effective I should replace the black girl with a white one. She said that this had nothing to do with the quality of the image or how beautiful the black girl was, because she was "no questions" gorgeous. She said that I shouldn't open my website with images of two models of color, specifically a woman of color. She said since the majority of fashion clients are gonna be white people, replacing the black girl with a white one would help make them feel connected and relate to my ideas of beauty.

I wasn't shocked by what she said but I was disappointed. It disappointed me that in this so-called post-racism climate that people like her found it difficult to identify with an idea of beauty that didn't look like them. They only connect and respond to other people who are white. We still live in a society where white ideas of beauty are the template for what is considered normal definitions of beauty. Everything else is considered "exotic" and unrelateable.

When I first came to NY other fashion people had told me I had too many models of color in my portfolio and that I should "diversify" my portfolio to incorporate majority white models so fashion clients don't feel alienated and disconnected from my work. I wasn't surprised by hearing someone say these things, but it was the very first time someone white said it directly to my face.

I didn't pay any attention to those kinds of criticisms about my work not being diverse enough. I was taught that an artist's work is a representation of either who he are she is or who they aspire to be. I am a Black American born and raised in Memphis, Tn. I am proud of all aspects of who I am and where I come from. Part of who I am is the ability to find fashion and  beauty in anyone and  use the  resources available to me to communicate my visions. Through my photography I try to capture the beauty of whomever is in front of my lens and celebrate the best of who that person is. My family, friends, and the environment I grew up in shaped and developed my ideas of who I am and my ideas of what is beautiful.

My body of work is very diverse in race, age, genders, and all types of skintones... but you do see more people of color represented in my presentation. I happen to be person of color so why would anyone expect to see majority of white people in my body of work? The world we live in is a botanical garden of beauty and my body of work reflects that.

I met fitness/ commercial model Darius Williams in the summer of 2011. He had just moved to NYC from Louisiana and reached out to me hoping we could work together. The minute i met him I saw something in him and was interested in working with him.

In the beginning it was tough. Darius isn't the typical skinny fashion model type...he's got a lotta junk in the trunk. A lot of people in this industry wasn't really interested in working with a black guy, especially one his size. I didnt care, I was up for the challenge of creating work that show he was marketable and could sell products..... I believed in him.

Despite all the odds that Darius faced, he was dedicated and believed in himself. His drive, focus, and  "never quit" attitude helped him get signed to one of the top men's agencies in the world and work with major commercial and fitness brands like Polo Ralph Lauren, Nike, Macy's, Reebok, Target, and 2Xist underwear. Many times when models start booking jobs, they tend to dismiss the people who believed in them in the beginning. They don't want to diminish their "brand." Darius wasn't that type of guy. He remained humbled and treated me the same. Maybe its a southern thang because both of us are proud southerners.

Darrius Williams  is currently represented by Soul Artist Mgmt.

Currently Darius is transitioning into a career in fitness and lifestyle training. He is merging his passion for fitness and southern charm into a career that is fulfilling for him. He enjoys helping other people reach their goals for a better body and a healthier lifestyle.

I am so happy for all of Darius success in modeling and I wish him continued success in his new endeavors in fitness. You can follow Darius on instagram at @darius_williams11

Friday May 13th I attended A Young Palate fashion Tasting at Public Factory in Soho. My friend , Ryan Eli Salter is The Bachelor Chef. I told him I wanted to photograph some food for my website I'm building and he invited me. I was my first time attending a food tasting event and it was also my first time photographing an event in NYC.

The event was hosted at The Public Factory which is a beautiful retail space that house about 15 unique men's and women's wear designers.
Sounds provided by twin models/DJs Torey & Khorey McDonald. - DJ's Soundcloud:https://soundcloud.com/toreyandkhorey

Fashion Tasting included (3) Carribean-Soul Inspired Dishes:
Grilled Chicken w/ BBQ Jerk Glaze & Mango Salsa on a Torta Roll
Shrimp Gyoza w/ Black Garlic & Chardonnay Sauce
Pineapple & Jalapeno Cerviche w/ Plantain Chips

I'm not a big fan of extremely spicy foods but those grilled chicken sliders with the bbq jerk glaze were delicious. My favorite was the Shrimp Gyoza w/ Black Garlic & Chardonnay Sauce. They were really good.

The Bachelor Chef with his sous-chef/ sever/ business partner extraordinaire Kathleen Adams
The beverage of the night was fresh lemonade with rosemary and basil leaves perfectly complimented the jerk chicken

After the Tasting, guests are escorted to HAUS Nightclub in TriBeCa for an after-party to remember... I was tired. I went home.

Brandon Ramon Williams is a model/actor represented by Kim Dawson in Dallas, Texas, CGM-Caroline Gleason Mgmt in Miami, and CESD Talent in New York. I've been working with Brandon for years and we've become good friends.

Brandon told me Blurred Lines Magazine contacted him about submitting images to be featured in an upcoming issue. They told him they'd give him the cover if he could get me to shoot it. I don't get asked to shoot cover features or editorials for magazines because i don't get any kind of creative freedom and they don't offer any kind of payment. Most of the time editorials turn in to "advertorials" used to reinforce advertising in the magazine. The magazine and advertisers are the main ones making money. The photographers aren't making money...they are suppose to want to do this for the exposure. I never needed the exposure....i have built a fairly respected name for myself.  I'm always interested in any opportunity where i get to show my creative side and do something new..

Doing this Blurred Lines Magazine cover and feature gave me opportunity to show people that my work was magazine worthy. It also gave me the opportunity to shoot a cover that people would remember they saw and inspire them.

Brandon has done some great sexy images with photographers like Rick Day and Karl Simone. I wanted to do something sexy but also show his personality. through the images, I wanted people to want to know him.

The theme was "Battle of the Sexes" - I wanted to do something that was fun and sexy. I wanted it to be the kind of sexy that appealed to straight men, gay men, and women in a way that would make them smile and laugh inside the head. I wanted to do something that a magazine wouldn't ideally ask for and other photographers and models would be inspired.
photo & concept by Tarrice Love (@bytarricelove)

The concept was inspired by a photo Lady Gaga on the cover of V Magazine. I kept staring at her dark lipstick thinking I could draw a pair of lips on a piece of cardboard and have him play with it .... thought it would be cool for a cover closeup. After that my mind exploded and a pair of lips turned into body parts.

I hope the viewers enjoy looking at these images as much as me and Brandon enjoyed creating them.

One day I was scrolling through my Facebook timeline and stopped on a video post featuring singer Ty Robinson. I watched the video for his song Yeah Yeah directed by my friend Tyren Redd. I liked the video and the song and internet surfing for more music. I eventual went to his Facebook page and noticed that he was in NY visiting his family. I decided to reach out to him to set up a quick portrait session. He stopped by before heading back to LA.

Ty Robinson is a singer/Songwriter/Model from New York, NY who with any early passion for music since child hood started singing to and for anyone who would listen. That then lead to him writing his first song at the age of seven. At 14 Ty Robinson began recording seriously and writing songs on a more professional level. Fast forwarding to Jan 7, 2009 Ty Robinson joined the Army. In the summer of 2010 Ty Robinson was deployed to Afghanistan for 12 months. I was on the phone casually chatting with D.C. photographer Justin Robinson (www.thejsrexperience.com). He was telling me that he was suppose to come to NY to work with award winning actor Julian Walker but he was not gonna be in town that weekend. I told him i wished I had the opportunity to work with more actors because they are more comfortable with being presented in a different light than today's models. He suggested I reach out to him through instagram and see if he was interested in working with me instead. He also said he would contact him and as well. Julian hit me back right away and we set up a day and time.

I was so nervous and excited especially because I saw the movie Blackbird about 3 times already. I
watched it again just to study is mannerisms and facial expressions.

Julian Walker is also a country boy like me. I am from Memphis,Tn and  he is from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He was college student at The University of Southern Mississippi when he submitted an audition tape for a feature film shooting locally. Although he had no prior acting experience, Julian's untapped, natural talent caught the eye of writer-director Patrik-Ian Polk (Punks, Noah's Arc, The Skinny) and he landed the lead role of Randy Rousseau in the Mississippi-set coming-of-age drama "Blackbird" featuring  Oscar-winner Mo'Nique and veteran actor Isaiah Washington. Because of his  performance L.A. Times named him one of the top 8 young black actors to watch.

Julian recently finsihed his first year apart of a National organization geared towards spreading awareness of HIV/AIDS to young men of color while prepping them for the real world. He strongly believes in motivating young men in fighting for their dream regardless of negative stigma. As he enters his second year of the organization he hopes to continue spreading positive energy to men & women across the country.

Recently named the recipient of the 2016 Humanitarian Award of Televison & Film at the Visions Community Foundations award ceremony, for his hard work within the community. He appreared on the Bounce TV's hit series Saints & Sinners as youth choir member Taj.

One of the things I hate about living in New York is the unavoidable mouse/rat situation. I have an extreme fear of any mice, rats, hamsters, gerbils, or any small furry creatures that run really fast. While sitting with Julian a mouse decided to make a cameo appearance in my living room. It got stuck on one of those sticky traps and tried to drag it behind the stove and made hella noise. I totally freaked out....i wanted to die. Of all moments in life for something like that to happen... I almost had an emotional breakdown. I was so embarrassed. He was so calm and chill and  seemingly unfazed, I was able to get myself together and finish the shoot. (My roommate, Geremy, caught it and "disposed" of 'em. haven't seen one since.)

I am so thankful for  Justin Robinson for helping me  with the  opportunity to work with Julian Walker. I love  the  images and I look forward to doing more work the  next time Julian is  in town.

MUSE NO.001: Sean Robinson

Muse...
Someone who makes you feel free to create with no agenda...
no limits...no restrictions.
Someone who inspires greatness.
Someone who loses themselves in the moment and inspires me to let go of all the industry shit built up in my head and create art.

A muse a person who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist....
That's what Sean Robinson was for me.

model: SEAN ROBINSON (currently unsigned)
ph. Tarrice Love
scarf: Forever 21

He has no limits...no restrictions...
He moves with reckless abandonment....
he's beautiful...
he is ART.
Working in the New York fashion industry i find it extremely difficult to fine a model that inspires me to get out of my head and be free. Most people just want images that will serve basic purpose of helping them book jobs. They aren't interested in creating art. They aren't interested in creating images that will inspire others and raise the bar. They just want to play it safe with hopes of making money.

I have always been interested in creating imagery that will live beyond my own existence. I want to create imagery that changes how people see and inspire them to change...

One of the girls i shot told me that my images of her were the first images that she felt she could live with....hang on her wall as a testament of the kind of beauty she wanted people to see in her.
That is what a muse does!

I was finally able to get model/actor/singer Jonathan Morgan (@st.jon) to traveled to Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn to collaborate in a photo session with me. We had been talking about working together for years through social media.

jonathan morgan @ wilhelmina ny - next models mgmt. la/miami from tarrice love on Vimeo.

When Jonathan arrived at my studio, he quickly expressed that his agency didn't want him shoot anymore body images... they needed more fashion images of him wearing clothes. It surprised me that he was interested in collaborating with me on this project because often times stylist/ fashion people want to put me in a category and assume I only shoot body images. I like shooting body images because  it affords  me  the  flexibility to use the  images in a more  artistic way.  I can completely understand why any photographer would want to shoot body images of him, he has an amazing body. He is built like "Lawd have mercy..." LOL!

This was a great opportunity to show industry people that I can shoot strong fashion images that translate in a classic editorial way. Fashion was my first love and I knew this particular collaboration was going to be fun.  Jonathan styled himself. He brought clothing from his personal closet and Zara Clothing store. We were going for a more classic, clean GQ look and the clothing fit that ideal perfectly.

When I first moved to New York City, I left my family, friends, and everything I knew to pursue my dream of being a fashion photographer. I put everything on faith and believed it would happen. Today is my 10 year anniversary of living in NYC.

In the beginning I focused created images that I hoped would make people stop, linger, and ask questions. I wanted you to remember what you saw and I stay in your mind. I pulled out all my creative cards to make that happen. I didn't have  access to designer clothes so I used the  resources I had and took creative risk and made artistic images that were beyond basic fashion shots. I would try to be creative with the styling. I would use my fashion talents to make things specifically for the model. I would get the model to show some character and personality that I hadn't seen in their previous work....spinning, dancing, kicking, singing, screaming, and saying the word "fuck"...anything that showed energy and made the images come alive.

When I do body work and  artistic nudes I would make them move and pose in ways that made their bodies look beautiful, fluid and graceful... like works of art. People tried to make it a negative thing - so I focused more on shooting basic fashion pieces hoping stylist and designers would consider working with me.

I noticed the modeling agencies would only use the simpler images in models portfolios and the creative shots stayed in somebody's desk drawer. I then started focusing on making the  best quality clean images possible. I thought I was the NY style... polished, clean, and sophisticated. I wanted to build relationships with the agencies and other fashion people so I put the creative ideas on the backburner and focused on giving people what I thought they wanted.

It didn't work.

Not only have I not developed and new relationships in the industry, I have become bored to death with photography. My work started to blend in with everyone else's. It's starting to become difficult for me to tell my work apart from other photographers.

I've come to realize that it is impossible to find happiness when I am holding myself back... limiting myself, and suppressing my own creativity. I am a creative person and I should never have stifled my creative growth to try to fit into this industry.

Right now I am trying to find my creative space again and really show y'all what I am about.

I've come to know the polished, clean, and sophisticated look is more NY style and that doesn't lend a lot of space to have your own style. Most of the black photographers I know who work in the ny market tend to play it safe...thats probably why their are no black photographers doing the same things that photographers like Bruce Weber, Mario Testino, or Steven Meisel get to do. All the black photographers I know that are located in other cities tend to have more fun and get to be creative. I wanted to build relationships with the agencies and other fashion people so I put my more creative ideas on the back burner and focused on giving people what I thought they wanted.

This was my second time working with actor Torrey Laamar who was one of the co-stars in the movie Blackbird starring Oscar award winning actress Mo'Nique, Isaiah Washington and Julian Walker (whom i also photographed). In the movie “Blackbird” Torrey plays Todd, the straight guy the main character, Randy Rousseau, has a crush on and his tortured by his dreams about him.

Since the release of the film, he graduated from University of North Carolina and is ready to dive into his next acting project. The first time we shot together I focused on doing classic, clean headshot/compcard images to show his personality.

I also wanted to show other acting talents that I do exclusively work with fashion models.

He portrayed a "sexy" character in the movie Blackbird so this time I wanted to do imagery that showed side of him. He has a good body with great angles and lines....I wanted to take advantage of that.

From Paris, Onnys has a beauty that is awe inspiring. Of French and African (Senegalese/Beninese) heritage, Onnys was discovered on the streets of Paris and has walk the fashion runways of some of the biggest designers in the world.

I was a big fan of Onnys' look and had been following him on social media for a long time. I took a meeting with his NY agent and set up a photo session with him. There were two things I noticed, one was that he had a great body and I felt my style of shooting complimented his body perfectly. The other thing I noticed was the fact that he had the same facial expression in every photo after i googled him. I knew I wanted to do killer body shots but I also wanted to do imagery that showed his personality because I couldn't find any photos of him smiling.

One of my strengths is shooting classic, clean, and timeless artistic nudes and body images. I worked really hard at shooting a style of images that feel like fashion. Models can always use a classy and  classic body image even when you don't have great clothes to work with. The morning of the shoot I received an email from his NY agent instructing me to do no nudes or body images. I was pissed that the things I do well was asked not to do. I didn't like that my creativity was restricted and limited to doing portraits. Not having access to great clothing makes creating cool fashion images extremely difficult. Its frustrating to constantly be expected to deliver awesome work that stands next to other photographers without having the same privileges and access. Its like being expected to win a race with my feet tied together. There is a negative stigma attached when a black photographer shoots body work.

The advancement of  photographic technology has made being a photographer easy and has over flooded the industry with a bunch of GWC (goons with cameras). The agents no longer trust photographers artistic vision and attach limits to what they can do in order to protect the models from bad imagery that could damage their careers.

I really wanted to work with Onnys, so I went through my closet and put some looks together. As usual, I made it work.

The agency gave him the wrong time and he was standing in the rain in front of my place when I arrived from #myclarkkent. Good thing it was light rain. I to a moment to dry off and collect myself. I immediately noticed he had a great smile and I knew that if nothing else we would get some great portraits.

Despite the creative limits, Onnys and I was able to great some really great images. They were classic, clean, and fashionable. He was great model to work with. Finally having him in front of my camera was a real joy. He has a great personality and I was able to capture that in my imagery with him. I really enjoyed my experience of working with him. I remember Onnys leaving the lab and I was wishing more models was like him.

the first time I noticed Trinidadian model/ dancer Jordun Love was in a video about fashion diversity on top model Shaun Ross's page. Shaun had tagged everyone in the video and I clicked on every tag until i found I found Jordun. I reached out to him about working together and we scheduled a day to make it happen. He came all the way from Philadelphia in the middle of a snow storm to work with me.
I didn't expect him to show up because of the weather...but he did...and he was on time. He was very professional and personable. That's rare for someone barely out of his teens.
Love is his real name (like mine) but we are not related.

After shooting with me, he took the images and met with agencies seeking representation and got signed pretty quickly. He is currently represented by New York Model management, Next Model Mgmt in LA., and Major in Milan.

Jordun Love's dance background and slender frame lends itself perfectly to stomp the runways of major designers like Givenchy, Kenzo, Custo and many others.
He recently snagged the principal male lead in pop artist Kehlani's new music video for her single Distraction.

He's appeared in major campaigns for United Colors of Benetton and Esprit (see above)

DO YOU REALLY WANNA SHOOT WITH ME?

I started doing photography because it gave me the opportunity to combine art and fashion together to make people see themselves and others  in a  new and different way. People reach out to me all the  time wanting to work with me...but they to lend the opportunity for creative freedom. They come through the door with rules and limitations. They want to create images that reflect how they see themselves. When working with fashion models, they want images that reinforce an idea that has been designed by their management teams. I end up recreating images they already have in their portfolio. The model and their management have a hard time filtering through photographers and trusting their vision. They are taking a risk every time  they step in front of a photographers lens...some of them are creepy and  don't necessarily have  the models best interest in mind. Its easier to play it safe and stick to the basics... you can't go wrong with basics.

Trust, it’s probably one of the hardest things to gain from a person. Giving control of your image to someone else and trusting that they will have your best interest in difficult. Digital photography advancements  have made it easier for anyone with access to a camera and  equipment to call themselves a photographer and harder to trust. The trust you have to have and give a photographer is really what it takes to make amazing photos.

I struggle with trying to give people what they say they want from me and  being creative. I moved to New York to create images that are timeless, classic, classy, and spark conversation. In this image congested world, I want you to remember you saw my work.

I was watching an interview with 90's waif supermodel Kristen McMenamy where she talked about when photographers had control and trusting them enough to give it her all for the picture. I am thankful and blessed to have worked with so many people who trust me and allow me to be an artist...even when it pushes them out of their comfort zone. When people step in front of my camera, one of my first thought is to make  the person feel comfortable, next I want them to trust my vision, and  once I have established a level of trust I want to create the best photo I have ever taken. I celebrate in every opportunity where I get to challenge myself and utilize my artistry to create an image I can't stop staring at.

Isha Blaaker was born in the South American country of Suriname in a city called Paramaribo but he spent most of his life in Holland. Now he is one of the leading male models traveling all over the world.

The first time I saw Isha was on social media. I started following him and reached out to him and told him if he ever was in nyc to hit me up so we could work together. about a year and a half later he hit me up and told me he had recently signed with Soul Artist Management (one of the top modeling agencies in America) and he was coming to America.

I went into Soul Artist and and sat down with booker OJ Williams and told him I wanted to photograph Isha. We set it up.....and made it happen.
He arrived that Saturday, late.....I was watching Think Like A Man and made him watch the end of it with me. During that time we clicked and became more than just model/photographer.... we became friends.

Isha isn't your typical male model. He has a lot of charm and personality. He is a lot of fun to be around and he makes work so much fun. He knows how to balance being professional and whimsical. Those Green eyes and that smile is winning......

He's one of a handful of black male models who is consistently working. If you follow him on social media you will see him in a different country almost every week. He's done shows and presentations for New York Fashion Week, tv commercials for Macy's and JC Penny's, and campaigns for H&M, Sean John, and Bjorn Borg

I have worked with a lot  of models but Isha is one of a small handful of people in NY who I would call my family. We've share birthdays, holidays and hung out for no reason. Most people in NY have a "hustle" mentality and tend to "use and go." Isha wasn't like that....he was open to building a genuine friendship that extends beyond photoshoots. I am so thankful to have good people like him in my life.

THE REALITY OF LIVING MY DREAM.....

$

I am Tarrice Love. I was born and raised in Memphis, Tn. My mom was a teen mother raising two boys alone, so I was accustom to living in "struggle-type" situations. I have spent my life using my creativity taking nothing and turning it into something. I wanted to be an artist in the fashion industry so I taught myself how to sew by taking clothes apart and putting them back together again. My granny was in medical school and she would get me and my little brother to draw her anatomy assignments... that help me to understand the human body and its relationship with clothing. I read every book I could find in the public library about fashion and art.

After my bother died (he shot himself while playing with a gun at a friend's house), I decided to go to college and study fashion design. That is when I discovered my love for photography. I was working at the local newspaper in the mailroom to help pay for school. I barely made enough to pay foy books and supplies. None of the local magazine would hire me as a photographer and none of the local model agencies wouldn't let a black man from South Memphis photograph their pristine white girls. I worked with my friends and classmates from college. After much resistance, I came to terms with the limited possibilities of living a fashion dream in Memphis was unlikely. I didn't want to give up because momma didn't raise no quitters. I decided to aim high. I told myself if I was gonna be broke and struggling, I might as well do so in a place I had a real chance to live my dream.

On October 27th, 2006 I packed my camera, computer, and my savings of $650 and moved to New York City to pursue my dream of being a noted fashion photographer. I started out couch crashing at photographer/model William Springfield's apartment in the Bronx. I really didn't know him but we became "friends" thru Black Planet, a social media website for black folks to connect with each other. I was taking a major leap of faith and basically moving in with a stranger. I transferred my job at FedEx working the elevator for International Customs to be a part-time foot courier in Manhattan. I didnt know what being a foot courier meant but I thought this was the best situation for me. A morning job with health care and benefits that allowed me a flexible schedule and freedom to pursue photography on my terms.

I start every morning waking up at 4am to get as much done before catching the 6:30am  subway train to Manhattan to do my "Clark Kent" (FedEx foot courier job). I call it my "Clark Kent" because of the way ppl ignore me when i'm in that uniform and the amount of work we haveta do within the time frame we have to do it. Its a grueling 100+ block radius with only a few hours to deliver. After work, I take my burning calves and swollen feet back home. I eat something right quick before models start arriving for any scheduled shooting. After the photoshoots are done i'm so tired, I usually skip dinner, try to get some retouching done and go to bed and at 4am the cycle starts all over again

I never anticipated the high cost of living and the constant inundation all around me of the things and experiences I cannot afford and how it slowly breaks you down inside. I couch crashed with Will for almost a year before I overstayed my welcome and had to move. I then moved to Williamsburg Brooklyn with a college friend for a few months until i found this place in Bedstuy that I share with 3 other guys. With the gentrification of our neighborhood, our "affordable" $2600 per month rent keeps going up and my hours at work keep going down. Along with rent, we even split all the gas, electric, and other utilities. Luckily when photoshoot gigs are slow and inconsistent my granny steps in and pays my cell phone bill for me.

The pressure of having and maintaining my steady part time job is becoming not so steady anymore. Last summer I was almost terminated and had to devote more attention to keeping main source of income. Modeling agencies and magazines rarely pay for  photoshoots and pressure us to deliver quality work fast, for FREE is beginning to drive me crazy. I don't have family and friends in New York to lean on for support. I'm here by myself.  All this has taken its toll on my morale.

Their are millions of people in New York but this is the loneliest place i've ever lived. Its extremely difficult to develop genuine relationships... people are on their hustle, with their hands out, ready to use you for whatever they can get and move on. Sometimes I feel like I am still at the bottom of the hill i've helped so many people climb. Years of this has chipped away my confidence and and self-worth and left me feeling empty, drained and frustrated. At the end of the day, I  haveta take off my delivery man uniform and perpetuate a false front of a glamorous life because that's what fashion photography is suppose to do - provide a visual doorway into a life of beauty and glamour.

In comparison to many, I am blessed. People believe I have this amazing life surrounded by amazing people. I get to work with top models, actors, dancers, performers, and athletes . I have a cool relationship with some of the biggest agencies in the world. I am creating images that impact people's lives and inspire other artist. I am in the city of dreams living mine. Now that I've come to point where the excitement of it has basically disappeared, I am fortunate enough to have a job and getting enough paid gigs to pay my bills at the end of the month.

I grew up actually believing that having talent, being willing to sacrifice and if i put in a lot of hard work, I could be anything I wanted to be. Despite being a young black male living in one of the poorest areas in Memphis, I still believed in the idea of the American Dream. I believed in the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Sometimes I find it more difficult to believe in something that I can't see.

I just want people  who are inspired by my work  to understand how real my struggle is and despite everything I still wake up every single morning and pray to God for understanding and strength to be motivated to keep trying and believing that things will be for the better. I am living in the most difficult times of my life but I still believe that I am suppose to be here.... producing work that is inspiring and life changing for myself and the people around me. #lovewashere
